Arriving home after a long flight to a house that has been shut for a year can be a shock: dust everywhere, no power, a leaking tap and a smell of damp. With two or three weeks’ notice, it can all be sorted before you land.
Three weeks before: inspect
- Check doors, windows, burglary-proofing and locks for any sign of forced entry.
- Look for roof leaks, damp, termite damage and blocked gutters.
- Test the electrics, generator or inverter, and note the prepaid meter balance.
- Run every tap and flush every toilet. Check the water pump and tank.
Anything found at this stage can be quoted and fixed in time.
Two weeks before: repairs
Get quotes for any repairs, and approve them before work starts. Keep photos of the problem, the work in progress and the finished job.
The week before: clean and stock
- A deep clean of every room, including fans, air conditioners and the kitchen.
- Fresh bedding and towels.
- Recharge the electricity meter and buy diesel or check the inverter batteries.
- Stock the fridge and kitchen with basics for your first few days.
The day you land
Arrange an airport pickup, and ask for the air conditioning and power to be on before you arrive.
